Winter Planning Guide

The Big Lake is a constant focal point in Copper Harbor. But there are numerous inland lakes, streams and waterfalls that make Copper Harbor a perfect example of why Michigan has been titled a "Winter Water Wonderland" and why our frozen waters will appeal to ice fisherman (and women!). Our winter season brings ice fishing for walleye, brook trout, splake, lake trout, perch and pike.

Lake Medora is just a few miles from Copper Harbor. Lake Fanny Hooe and Lake Manganese are within walking distance of the village. Lake Manganese, one of the most delightful and accessible little lakes you'll find anywhere, is maintained by Fort Wilkins State Park for winter and summer recreation. Lac La Belle, down the south side of the Peninsula off US-41, is a short drive or snowmobile ride away.

When ice fishing, keep your snowmobile off inland lakes. The ice cover is mostly heavy, thick slush, sometimes several feet worth. And you’ll work many hours to free your machine should it get bogged down in this glop.

Public access is available at all our inland lakes and streams. Conditions in some areas are primitive and you should come prepared with suitable layers of clothing, something to eat and whatever else you will need to be warm, comfortable and safe. If you're new to the sport and would like some extra help, inquire about fishing guides.

Ice fishing equipment, bait, contest information, bulletins on what's biting and other vital details needed to experience the joy of watching the flag pop and pulling your catch onto the ice is available in Copper Harbor and at the Lac La Belle Lodge.
