Copper Harbor is located in Keweenaw County, the northernmost county in Michigan.
To top that, Copper Harbor is the northernmost town in Michigan.

How to Get to Copper Harbor

While proclaimed as the furthest town in the U.S. from an interstate highway (251 miles), a trip to Copper Harbor is off the beaten path, though that’s part of what makes it nice. All roads leading to the top of Michigan are well maintained, paved highways. Federal highway US-41 and State highway M-26 are open all year and are regularly plowed during the winter months.

Heading north from Houghton after crossing the lift bridge into Hancock, highways US-41 and M-26 split, though both inevitably end up in Copper Harbor. They briefly join together in Calumet before they split again at Phoenix. From that point, US 41 traverses the center of the peninsula and eventually thru the “Tunnel of Trees”, while M-26 (aka Lakeshore Drive) hugs the Lake Superior coastline before they meet again in Copper Harbor at land’s end. Both routes are very scenic for their own reasons and it’s recommended to take one on the way here and the other upon your departure.

Despite its remoteness, getting here is closer than you might think with an easy one hour flight from Chicago O’Hare to the Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX). With easy connections from airports across the country, United has several daily non-stop flights serving our rural region. Car rental is available at the airport and Keweenaw Adventure Company offers a shuttle service for the afternoon arrival and departure flights for the 40 mile drive to/from Copper Harbor.
